Botanicals and organic materials were applied directly to a piece of fabric made from natural fibres to extract the natural dye. Once the colour was transferred from plant material to cloth, the fabric was soaked in an iron extract made from rusty objects found along the River Thames. This modified the colour to achieve shades of dark green, blue, purple, yellow and brown.
